Phoslock Water Solutions (PWS) provides a long term solution to algal bloom issues by applying a product (Phoslock) that restricts the concentration of orthophosphate (PO4) in a water body and in sediment pore water. In turn, a reduction of PO4 means that an important food source of algae (particularly blue-green algae) is restricted; the cells “starve”; and concentrations significantly reduce. Sustained reduction in PO4 is maintained over time by the Phoslock residing on the top of the sediment at the bottom of the water body. Algal blooms are a natural part of the aquatic environment. The complete and permanent control of algae is a difficult task and it is likely that reservoir managers will have difficulty in completely controlling algal blooms. A number of methods are available to manage blooms over a short period of time. In contrast to the traditional methods used to manage algal blooms, Phoslock provides a long-term, sustainable solution for algal blooms by removing one of the essential nutrients, thus controlling the growth and proliferation of algae. Our Technical Team assesses the historical physico-chemical conditions of an application and can calculate a separate dose rate of Phoslock for each individual water body. We consider all aspects of the aquatic ecosystem including chemical and biological attributes. In aquaculture ponds, our product has been proven to control and manage blue-green algal blooms. By reducing the concentrations of blue-green algae, it eliminates the issues of off-flavour and toxins in the culture species. |
